Most dental care coverage places an emphasis on regular preventive care by covering routine costs. A thorough examination by the dentist and a set of x-rays are all it usually takes to diagnose a problem. By placing an emphasis on prevention, and by covering regular teeth cleaning and check-ups, Americans saved nearly $100 billion in dental care costs since the 1980s.

In addition to routine dental care, plans are available that cover the broad array of Basic and Restorative dental services. These types of plans usually include annual deductibles and maximum limits limits in the policiy. There are also plans available that include coverage for Orthodontic services.

Types of Dental Plans

DMO

Similar to HMO, a Primary Dentist is selected  to deliver and coordinate dental care.  In the event dental services are required from specialists such as Periodontists or Endodontists, the primary Dentist refers and coordinates this care. DMO plans are typically lower in cost.

PPO

Unlike a DMO plan, there is no selection of a Primary Dentist.  These plans offer direct access to dental providers, including specialists, without the need for referral from a Primary Dentist.  PPO plans are typically higher in costs.
